How helpful are travel apps for planning? We tested out Mindtrip’s tool on Travel Nevada’s website…

Travel News / Destination Nevada / AI Travel Planning

Travel Nevada has taken a bold step into the future of travel planning.  A recent partnership with Mindtrip, an AI-powered platform, promises to transform how travelers discover and experience the Silver State. This cutting-edge technology creates personalized travel itineraries in moments, aiming to turn inspiration into action with just a few clicks.

But the question remains: is AI ready to plan your next Nevada road trip?

We’ve tested various AI tools to assist with travel planning and research with mixed results. While some AI recommendations introduce us to hidden gems that turn out to be good travel experiences, others suggest places that are out of business, poorly rated, or misaligned with our travel intentions.

Typically, we spend hours researching, confirming, and refining AI suggestions to create something truly suited to our preferences.

What seems to be different with Mindtrip is their direct integration with the destination’s official site data. Because of that, it could potentially eliminate businesses that are no longer in operation. Curious about the effectiveness, we put the tool to the test for a Nevada road trip. I’ll get to the results in a minute.

Mindtrip: AI-Powered Revolution in Travel Planning

Mindtrip recently announced a partnership with Travel Nevada to help people plan the perfect Nevada vacation

Launched in early May 2025, this partnership integrates Mindtrip’s AI directly into Travel Nevada’s website. The promise is that the technology goes beyond simple recommendations, creating comprehensive, personalized itineraries based on travelers’ specific interests and preferences.   https://travelnevada.com/

“Nevada may be known for dazzling cities like Las Vegas and Reno, but there are so many other hidden gems worth exploring,” says Andy Moss, Co-founder and CEO of Mindtrip. “By integrating our AI solution into their website, we are making it easy for travelers to discover, plan, and book personalized, memorable getaways.”

What makes this interesting is its ability to create highly specific itineraries that combine Travel Nevada’s rich content with real-time information about closures, travel advisories, and local events. The system not only suggests destinations but optimizes routes to minimize unnecessary travel, ensuring travelers make the most of their Nevada adventure.

Beyond the Obvious: Discovering Nevada’s Hidden Gems

Users can chat with AI to get the perfect itinerary that may include attractions like the Boulder Dam Museum.

Mindtrip’s partnership with Travel Nevada hopes to be particularly valuable for its ability to highlight destinations beyond the well-known attractions. The AI can suggest off-the-beaten-path experiences that might otherwise remain undiscovered.

“Our website is full of amazing stories and points of interest that span the entire state,” says Caroline Sexton, Travel Nevada’s Chief Marketing Officer. “The addition of the Mindtrip for Business tool will expand the content we provide to digital visitors, providing them instant recommendations that deliver on everything they want and more so they can begin to plan their Nevada vacation.”

For example, someone interested in camping near Ely might be guided to explore Cave Lake State Park, Ward Mountain Recreation Area, and Egan Crest. Families with young children can receive suggestions tailored to their specific needs, highlighting age-appropriate activities happening in the area.

Wellness, Wine, and Culinary Adventures: A Sample Itinerary

It’s important to be detailed about the type of travel experience you’re looking for when using an AI travel planning app.

To test the capabilities of this new technology, we requested a personalized road trip focusing on wellness, wine, culinary experiences, and light outdoor adventures. Within moments, Mindtrip generated the following four-day itinerary:

Day 1: Culinary Delights in Las Vegas

The journey begins in Las Vegas with a visit to Giada, where Italian cuisine meets Californian influences in a sophisticated setting. From there, the itinerary suggests heading to STRAT Tower for breathtaking panoramic views of the city. For dinner, the AI recommends the Eiffel Tower Restaurant, offering a romantic atmosphere with stunning views of the Las Vegas Strip.

Day 2: Wellness and Outdoor Adventure in Henderson

On the second day, the focus shifts to wellness in nearby Henderson. The itinerary recommends unwinding at Canyon Ranch Spa + Fitness Las Vegas, where travelers can enjoy wellness services, including massages and fitness classes. For afternoon outdoor adventures, the plan suggests exploring the nearby Red Rock Canyon for a scenic drive or a light hike among striking red rock formations.

Day 3: Wine and Relaxation in Boulder City

The journey continues to Boulder City for day three, with a recommendation to rejuvenate at Spa Toscana with luxurious treatments. Then, the AI suggests exploring the rich history of the area and visiting the nearby Valley of Fire State Park for a leisurely hike among ancient petroglyphs and vibrant sandstone formations.

Day 4: Return to Las Vegas for a Night Out

For the final day, the itinerary brings travelers back to Las Vegas for one last night of culinary exploration. The AI recommends dining at TAO Asian Bistro & Nightclub, enjoying a fusion of Asian cuisines in a lively atmosphere. To cap off the adventure, the plan suggests a thrilling experience at SlotZilla Zipline Las Vegas, soaring over the bustling crowds of Fremont Street.

How Did the AI Nevada Road Trip Do?

Fly Geyser could be one of your road trip stops if you ask the app to take you to natural wonders in Nevada.

To be fair, my instruction to the AI tool was very basic, and more details may have received better results:

“I would like to plan a road trip with wellness, wine, and culinary travel as a priority in addition to light adventure outdoor experiences.”

Overall, the itinerary generated for this road trip was underwhelming.

The four-day plan mostly stayed in and around Las Vegas, which isn’t much of a road trip. Despite my request for wine and culinary experiences,  the results provided just three restaurant choices for a four-day trip with no mention of a wine experience. Perhaps fasting was part of the wellness portion?

Day two recommends hiking in Red Rock Canyon in the afternoon, which isn’t always ideal. While the trails are a great option, an afternoon hike in a hot season could be dangerous at worst, uncomfortable at best. When we lived in Southern California, we often visited Vegas in September, hiking Red Rock Canyon trails early in the morning to avoid afternoon heat, followed by pool time at our resort.

On day three, the itinerary sends you from Las Vegas to Boulder City in Northern Nevada for a spa (400+ miles) and then back to Valley of Fire State Park (400+ miles), all in one day. Even for ambitious travelers, that’s a lot of road time. So the logistics didn’t work.

There is no mention about where to stay or other things to do in Las Vegas, or any lesser-known attractions located between Las Vegas and Reno.

The conclusion: Using a very basic AI prompt to generate a road trip resulted in a greatly flawed itinerary. But we didn’t stop there because what they say about life is also true about AI. The quality of your questions determines the quality of your answers.

AI Features You’ll Enjoy

Ther quality of your questions will determine the quality of your AI generated travel itinerary.

While the first AI-generated itinerary was disappointing, Mindtrip includes options to add to, edit, enhance, and save your trip details. By asking AI a series of questions in the chat, like “What are the must-see locations in Nevada,” you’ll discover additional possibilities.

The gallery feature lets you browse restaurants, accommodations, and activities to add to your travel itinerary. You can also set budget ranges, document reservations, and see a calendar view of your travel plans for export when ready.

Warning: The conversation with your AI travel companion can lead you down the proverbial rabbit hole. Plan your time accordingly!. cool

AI-Generated Nevada Road Trip: Take 2

Valley of Fire red rock formation AI travel planning excursion

For outdoor fun, the AI travel planning app suggested a hike at Valley of the Fire near Las Vegas.

I gave Mindtrip a second chance, providing it with a more detailed prompt:

“Design a detailed 3-week Nevada road trip itinerary starting in Las Vegas and ending at Lake Tahoe. Include: A day-by-day route limit driving to about 3 hours per day, recommended accommodations focusing on boutique and luxury hotels, culinary highlights including local restaurants, wineries, distilleries, and craft breweries, wellness experiences, light outdoor activities suitable for moderate fitness levels, accessible water activities, hidden gems, cultural experiences, best times to visit, restaurant recommendations, travel times between destinations, and alternative options.”

This time, the result was far more creative. It compiled a journey that ventured beyond Las Vegas, explored small towns between Vegas and Reno, and ended with an extended stay in Lake Tahoe. The locations should still be confirmed to be sure the route makes sense.

Here’s the updated Nevada road trip starting in Las Vegas and ending at Lake Tahoe. Each location opened into a Lightbox view on the Mindtrip site with details so you can decide to keep the suggestion or search for something different:

Day 1: Arrival in Las Vegas

Welcome to vibrant Las Vegas! Settle into your luxurious stay at the Bellagio Las Vegas. Enjoy the mesmerizing Fountains of Bellagio show, and dine at The Front Yard, known for its craft beers and American cuisine.

Day 2: Explore Las Vegas

Is This the Future of Travel Planning?

vehicle traveling an open road by Lake Mead Nevada

Travel planning is just the first step to turning your dreams into a trip and the AI travel planning tool is designed to make that transition seamless.

The partnership between Travel Nevada and Mindtrip represents a significant shift in destination marketing.  The tool creates a seamless bridge between inspiration and action.

Once created, itineraries can be easily shared with family and friends, useful when traveling as a group, or letting loved ones know about your solo travel plans. It also provides the partner, in this case Travel Nevada, an organic way to engage with people who might be interested in exploring the state.

The platform continually updates its information, ensuring travelers have the most current details about their destinations. I found the mapping feature helpful as it’s similar to what I do on my iPhone when planning trips. The ability to record bookings and add receipts can be helpful for organization.

The challenge, as with any travel planning app, is privacy. Discussion on online forums question who owns the data and how it’s shared. While many entities already access our travel data, safety remains a consideration for travelers.

Nevada is just one of Mindtrip’s partners. Others include national tourism boards like Visit Costa Rica, U.S. territory DMOs like Discover Puerto Rico, state organizations like Visit California, and smaller destinations like Visit Truckee-Tahoe.

Planning Your Own AI-Curated Itinerary

While AI travel planning provides a good starting point, refinement is necessary to craft your perfect trip. Also, leave room for spontaneity while you travel…you never know where an unplanned side trip will lead.

As travel continues to evolve in the digital age, partnerships like Travel Nevada and Mindtrip demonstrate how technology can enhance rather than replace the human elements that make travel special.

My key takeaways from testing the tool: While it can provide a preliminary framework for a Nevada road trip or vacation, don’t accept the first suggestion.

The quality of output directly reflects the quality of your input. How well you communicate the type of travel experience you desire matters. The partnership suggests data comes directly from Nevada’s official tourism site, potentially providing more recent information and avoiding a location that might be permanently or temporarily closed. However, I would still verify the information and explore other options not included in the initial itinerary. Keep in mind that if a business is not part of their site, it may not show up as an option.

Further, the integrated mapping feature means you keep all your trip planning in the same place.

Personalized Journeys

Before AI technology, that sort of personalization was the realm of travel agents. More recently, we’ve turned to social media and trusted experts for inspiration and tips.

Either way, planning a trip takes time. You must decide whether to DIY, consult a travel agent, or seek guidance from online travel experts. Travel agents offer booking assistance and support during unexpected situations. Many online travel creators provide ready-made itineraries or personalized services for reasonable fees.

At the end of the day, no matter how you plan your next adventure, it’s the discovery, personalization, and joy of experiencing something unexpected that drives our desire to travel. While any AI tool has imperfections, they can help you travel more, travel better, and get on the road sooner.
