The best food in downtown Orlando isn’t hiding in tourist traps or chain restaurants. It’s thriving in the walkable heart of the city where local chefs are crafting culinary experiences worth building an entire weekend around. 

I headed to Orlando for a wine tasting experience with one of about 279 Master Sommelier’s in the world. Arriving by train on Friday night gave me a day and a half to explore the culinary scene in downtown Orlando Florida. I was looking forward to the food scene that continues to surprise me with each visit.

From innovative tacos paired with house margaritas to craft coffee that fuels morning explorations around Lake Eola, you’ll never have the same experience twice. Then, an intimate cigar lounge that offers the perfect nightcap to creative small plates bursting with unexpected flavors—Orlando’s downtown district revealed itself as a foodie paradise that deserves your attention. This is my journey through some standout spots that showcase why Orlando’s culinary landscape should inspire you to venture downtown for a taste of something special..

Solita Tacos & Margaritas

I was craving something light to eat after an extended travel day. Solita Tacos and Margaritas, just a short stroll from AC Hotel Orlando, proved to be the perfect choice.

With locations in Valencia and Huntington Beach, California, the Downtown Orlando Restaurant location is their first in Florida. It was not very busy when we arrived around 8pm; however, because of its premium location near downtown’s sports and entertainment venues I’m sure it draws a crowd during peak hours.

The Dining Experience:

The atmosphere was colorful and friendly. A group gathered at a table nearby and showed off their banana suits before parting for the evening. I think they were doing some carb loading before a 5K race that was running through town the next morning.

Their signature Guacamole Solita, a blend of avocado, mango, serrano, tomato, onion & cilantro, is a must-order if you enjoy mango. Sweet mango compliments a touch of heat from the serrano chile. The accompanying tortilla chips were light and crisp and perfect for dipping.

What I Ordered

We shared the El Primo Street Taco Tasters, sampling a variety of styles: wood-grilled carne asada, oak roasted chipotle chicken, and Ensenada crispy fish with a side of coleslaw. The street tacos delivered on flavor – each offering its own distinct profile and the House Margaritas were cold and refreshing. Our server was friendly and may have been new to the restaurant. Everything arrived at the table at the same time but with a small meal, it was not an inconvenience.

After wandering through Downtown Orlando’s vibrant streets, taking in the city lights and lively Friday night crowds, we found ourselves drawn to the sophisticated allure of Corona Cigar Company.

The Experience

While cigarette smoke typically sends me running for fresh air, there’s something pleasant about the sweet aroma of premium cigars. The evening ambiance at Corona Cigar Company strikes a balance of classy and cool without trying too hard. There is a dress code at night in the bar, so keep it classy!

Rows and rows of premium cigars line the aisles on one side of the establishment while a vibrant bar scene occupies the other half. The bartenders were busy and efficient as they tended to a packed house. 

The Spanish-styled space with multiple water features accommodates all social scenarios. Seating inside and out on the patio are perfect for everything from large groups of friends and casual conversations, to quiet corners for intimate dates. And the people watching will not disappoint!

Security staff positioned discreetly by the entrances ensured the atmosphere remained enjoyable, though their presence seemed purely precautionary during our visit. 

What I Ordered

I chose an Old Fashioned made with rye whiskey – a classic choice that didn’t disappoint. Of course I let the Luxardo cherry soak up as much rich whiskey as possible before indulging in the sweet fruit. We carried our drinks outdoors where the spring-like night air and ambient music created the perfect finale to our first night in Orlando.

Saturday unfolded with a perfect blend of relaxation and culinary discovery with the best food in downtown Orlando. Beginning with a coffee run that turned into a healthy breakfast, then savoring innovative small plates and creative cocktails at a tropical-inspired space for dinner. We ended the day at a swanky and sexy Gilded Age-inspired lounge for a night cap.

We had planned to head straight to Lake Eola for our morning walk, but one glance at Craft and Common’s menu had us quickly revising our itinerary.

The Dining Experience

The cafe’ was buzzing with energy. A line of morning runners poured out the door, waiting for their first cup of coffee or well-earned breakfast. There was a 5K and 10K race that morning so the place may have been busier than normal. Despite the unusual morning rush, the staff maintained an impressive rhythm, providing attentive service that never felt hurried. The option to order online from your phone while you stood in line, kept everything moving smoothly behind the counter.

What struck me immediately was the thoughtful interior design – crisp white walls complemented by natural rattan and light wood elements, creating a minimalist yet inviting space. Strategically placed greenery added life to the clean aesthetic, perfectly mirroring the fresh, quality ingredients that define their menu. It felt as clean as the food served.

What I Ordered

The avocado toast caught my eye – a beautiful arrangement topped with peppery arugula and creamy goat cheese that balanced perfectly with the rich avocado base. For my drink, I ventured beyond my usual coffee order to try the Pacific Fog – an inspired blend of espresso, non-dairy milk, lavender syrup, honey, and pink Himalayan sea salt that delivered complex flavors in every sip.

We couldn’t resist trying their special Overnight Oats when our server mentioned they tasted like carrot cake – a claim that was deliciously accurate! What began as a quick coffe stop transformed into a leisurely breakfast experience.

To thrive is to prosper and flourish—a philosophy perfectly embodied by Thrive in downtown Orlando. Step inside and you’re immediately transported to a tropical oasis, thanks to the lush greenery adorning nearly every wall.

The Dining Experience

We made reservations at this popular spot known for creative small plates with playful, pun-filled names like “(To)fu Fighters,” “Cukes of Hazard,” and “Takes Two to Mango.” Their diverse menu ranges from shareable small plates and gourmet sliders, to sushi and bone-Tomahawk steak. The architectural details caught my eye immediately—particularly the rustic brick wall behind the bar where horizontal slats cleverly mount stylish shelving.

The drink menu itself was a conversation starter. Each cocktail name was accompanied by colorful geometric graphics that looked like my granddaughter’s colorful magnetic tiles. It seemed to serve as a color-coded legend for how much of each ingredient was included in the cocktail. 

The space strikes a perfect balance: casual yet sophisticated, with a lively bar running along one wall and comfortable seating along the other. What stood out most was the genuine energy—staff who clearly enjoy working there serving guests noticeably enjoying their meals.

What I Ordered

I started with the “Citrus Protection Program”—a refreshing blend of Ketel One Botanical Cucumber and Mint Vodka, Caravella Limoncello, house-made cucumber-basil syrup, fresh lemon and lime, topped with white cranberry and served in a tall highball glass. It was as refreshing as it sounds and I would happily order it again.

If you’re in the mood for something richer and more fruit-forward, then the “Smashing Baby” is definitely worth a try. A reimagined whiskey smash featuring Smooth Ambler Contradiction Bourbon, Aperol Aperitivo Liqueur, cane syrup, plump blackberries, lemon, and fresh mint. Oh that blackberry!

We sampled three small plates starting with the “Drunken Belly”—generous bourbon-glazed pork belly bites topped with scallions and serrano peppers, served alongside perfectly prepared sushi rice. Thick, tender pork morsels soaked in bourbon created a delectable combination of sweet, savory, and heat? Yes please!

Next came the surprising “Cali Buds.” I would never have thought to roast cauliflower with a barbeque dry rub, but they did! The florets were roasted with barbecue dry rub and served with shiso goat cheese ranch, sesame seeds, and fresh scallions. This dish alone is worth replicating at home because anytime I can incorporate goat cheese into a meal is a good time and the perfectly seasoned cauliflower was inspiring. 

Finally, we had to try the sliders and opted for the Small, Dark & Handsome because of the blend of blackberries and brie cheese. Cooked medium-rare, they came as a trio served on a toasted bun. I think you would be happy with anything you order from their menu and we enjoyed everything served, looking forward to returning!

We peeked into the window while walking downtown earlier that morning and instantly knew Bellhop deserved an evening visit.

The Dining Experience

The back wall features an absolutely stunning design element — vintage suitcases and trunks artfully stacked from floor to ceiling! This visual centerpiece sets the tone for the entire space: richly painted dark walls, soft brown leather seating throughout, and perhaps most unexpectedly, oriental carpets suspended from the ceiling as if waiting for Alladin to arrive. Walking in feels like stepping into a nostalgic and thrilling portal to another time.

The moment you cross the threshold, you’re transported to a boutique hotel from the 1920s, thus that name “Bellhop.” A tall, divided wooden shelf topped with a classic clock displays 36 vintage hotel keys, each attached to ornate golden bell-shaped holders with elegant tassels. These keys immediately triggered memories of my stay at a centuries-old hotel in Rome, where I was firmly instructed to leave my oversized key at reception whenever I ventured out — losing it simply wasn’t an option.

Sitting prominently on the counter is an oversized brass call bell, the kind you’d ring to summon the hotel reception and, of course, the bellhop. The thoughtful layout offers a stylish coffee bar to the left, while the cocktail bar to the right showcases mixologists who can stir, shake, and pour to your heart’s desire.

What I Ordered

I ordered an espresso martini (sticking with my vodka spirit choice for the evening) which proved the perfect choice. I savored it slowly . A perfect nightcap in Downtown Orlando.

AC Sky Bar (Brunch)

At night, the rooftop bar pulses with energy — music fills the air, laughter mixes with conversations, seat-side fire features cast a warm glow, and Orlando’s skyline twinkles below. By day, this same space transforms into a haven of sunlight and blue skies, creating the perfect backdrop for a leisurely brunch experience.

The Dining Experience

It’s no surprise that Orlando Weekly named this the best rooftop bar in both 2023 and 2024. Perched up here, you truly feel on top of the world. 

The panoramic views through tall glass panels showcase Orlando’s sporting landmarks, including the Kia Center and Inter & Co Stadium. Despite the freeway running directly below, there was no intrusive traffic noise or vehicle exhaust to distract from the experience. We couldn’t have asked for more perfect weather. Brilliant blue skies dotted with just a few clouds created an ideal setting for brunch before our afternoon wine tasting experience.

What I Ordered

Seeking something satisfying yet light, I chose the Pepper Smoked Salmon & Bagel. The presentation was beautiful — tender smoked salmon accompanied by traditional garnishes of capers, thinly sliced red onions, perfectly hard-cooked egg, fresh tomatoes, and cream cheese. The bagel itself deserves special mention — dense with just the right chew and toasted to golden perfection. Paired with the AC Classic Mimosa, it was exactly the bright, refreshing start our day needed.

We briefly enjoyed Downtown Orlando before attending the main event that brought us to the city — an exceptional wine tasting with Master Sommelier George Miliotes at Judson’s Live in the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. The wine experience exceeded all expectations. Mr. Miliotes, who owns Wine Bar George in Disney Springs, conducted the tasting with an approachable expertise that made the event educational and thoroughly enjoyable. He didn’t even laugh at me when I noted that the aroma of one of the wines reminded me of a tire store!

Our dining choices in downtown Orlando throughout the weekend were perfect for our short stay. The sophisticated ambiance of Thrive paired with Bellhop’s vintage charm delivered an ideal date-night atmosphere, while Corona Cigar Company provided a front-row seat to downtown Orlando’s vibrant Friday night energy. 

Solita Tacos impressed with their flavorful offerings, particularly their signature Guacamole Solita, though I found the prices somewhat surprising. The service pace was slightly inconsistent despite the restaurant being relatively quiet, perhaps because we arrived after peak dinner hours.

Our downtown hotel was perfect because we could easily walk to everything. Lake Eola Park, with its scenic one-mile loop, is an ideal spot for early morning exercise. We even got a little culture in with an impromptu ballet performance at the Walt Disney Amphitheater. 

For my next visit, I’m eager to explore the Orlando Urban Trail, which is easily accessible from downtown. I had initially considered bringing my bicycle but opted instead for the convenience of Amtrak service from Sarasota to Orlando — a decision that worked perfectly for this trip, though I’m now planning a future visit with bikes in tow.

The blend of culinary discoveries, unexpected cultural moments, and the city’s walkable downtown made for an enriching weekend that showcased Orlando’s appeal well beyond its world-famous theme parks.

I decided to try the Amtrak service from Sarasota to Orlando for several reasons. Traveling on a Friday, I calculated it might take roughly the same time as driving, but I’d avoid Friday traffic congestion. This option would also spare my car unnecessary miles and fuel consumption, plus give me precious time to catch up on work while someone else handled the driving!

My experience was somewhat mixed.

The Amtrak journey from Sarasota to Orlando involves two modes of transportation: bus and train. You begin with a bus ride from Sarasota to the Amtrak station in Tampa’s historic Ybor City district, then board the train for the final leg to Orlando.

The Bus: The bus connecting Sarasota to Ybor City was a pleasant surprise. Comfortable, relatively new, and offering a smooth ride. The pickup location was clearly marked at a gas station near I-75, making it easy to find. Our driver was friendly and accommodating, and the ticketing process was convenient with options to display tickets from the Amtrak app or as printed copies. Although freeway traffic was unusually heavy due to a fire in the distance (which delayed our bus), this ultimately didn’t derail my plans.

The Train: The Amtrak schedule typically builds in a one-hour buffer between bus arrival and train departure. With the unexpected traffic delays, our bus pulled into the station exactly when the train was scheduled to depart. I briefly worried I’d miss my connection and mentally prepared a backup plan to rent a car if necessary. Fortunately, the train was also running slightly behind schedule, so I made it aboard without issue.

Conclusion: While the bus portion of the journey exceeded expectations, the train experience fell short of what travelers might be accustomed to in European rail systems. The train cars appeared somewhat dated and in need of modernization, though the seats provided decent comfort. The ride quality was noticeably bumpy at times. Overall, I’d describe it as a functional alternative to driving – it serves its purpose of getting you from point A to B without having to be behind the wheel, which aligned with my primary goal. Despite arriving about 90 minutes later than planned, the delay didn’t significantly impact my weekend. I might try this option again for convenience, though I’m eagerly awaiting the Brightline expansion to eventually reach Tampa, which promises a more polished rail experience!

AC Hotel Orlando Downtown by Marriott

The stay at AC Hotel Orlando Downtown by Marriott was truly exceptional for our best food in downtown Orlando weekend. Our corner room offered windows that framed expansive views of Orlando’s downtown skyline. The room’s modern, minimalist design created a sense of spaciousness that was enhanced by the abundant natural light flooding through the floor-to-ceiling glass. Waking up and sliding open the curtains to see the city laid out before us was a beautiful start of the day.

The AC Hotel Orlando Downtown blends Orlando’s historic character with the sophisticated aesthetic that AC Hotels are known for. Occupying the upper levels (floors 18-25) of the prominent Truist Bank building, they deliver a high-rise experience that stands out in Orlando’s accommodation landscape. The elevation provides spectacular views and a welcome sense of tranquility above the bustling streets. They thoughtfully placed earplugs on the table for those not used to city noise, although we didn’t feel the need to use them.

All 180 rooms feature sleek European-inspired design philosophy that emphasizes form and function. Nothing feels superfluous or cluttered. The bathroom featured a rainfall shower head. I appreciated the thoughtful tech integration, with strategically placed USB ports and intuitive lighting controls.

And then there is the AC Sky Bar. We always knew which guests were heading up to the top for a bit of evening fun by the way they were dressed…fancy!  You can enjoy panoramic views day and night, with beverages and food to please your palate and mood. 

The hotel’s central downtown location was invaluable, located within easy walking distance of our dining destinations, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, and Lake Eola. For travelers seeking an Orlando experience beyond the theme parks, AC Hotel Orlando Downtown by Marriott offers the perfect base for exploring the city.
