In fact, Florida dominates watermelon production, ranking first in the United States according to the Department of Agriculture (2023), with more than 25,000 acres dedicated to growing this popular summer fruit. This may be partially due the fact that Monticello, Florida was the watermelon center of the state in the early 1920s, supplying watermelon seeds worldwide.

What makes Florida watermelons special? Enthusiasts say it’s the quality. The state’s unique combination of sandy soil, abundant sunshine, and warm climate creates ideal growing conditions. Plus, they have the earliest growing and harvesting season in the country, starting in the southern region then moving northward as summer progresses.

Florida Orange Groves Winery – St. Petersburg, FL

Florida Orange Groves Winery in St. Petersburg stands out with their unique approach to winemaking. Their “Watermelon Wave” captures summer in a bottle. Unlike typical grape wines, this family-owned operation creates premium wines made from 100% pure fruit juice. Each bottle of their specialty wines requires up to nine pounds of fresh fruit. 

Established in 1997 after years of perfecting their techniques, they’ve become the only Florida winery to earn the Florida Department of Citrus’ mark of quality and secure a coveted spot at Disney’s Epcot International Food and Wine Festival. Their lineup includes 43 different varieties. Each wine reflects the natural flavor of its source fruit. Visitors enjoy tastings of their tropical, citrus, and berry creations, with the watermelon wine providing a particularly cooling option during Florida’s warm months.

Schnebly Redland’s Winery – Homestead, FL

This is America’s southernmost winery.  Schnebly Redland’s Winery is a delightful twist on traditional wine tasting.  Located south of Miami, this family-owned operation on a 30-acre property creates wines from tropical fruits like mango, lychee, passion fruit, and carambola, rather than grapes. 

The setting itself is worth the visit. Cascading waterfalls and charming tiki huts create a relaxed tropical atmosphere to sample their unique beverages. For fruit wine enthusiasts, this makes a perfect addition to a South Florida itinerary, providing flavors you simply won’t find at conventional wineries. 

As the southernmost winery in the continental United States, it represents Florida’s agricultural creativity while offering a memorable tasting experience that captures the essence of the region’s tropical bounty.

U-Pick Watermelon Farms Across Florida

Visit Florida farms from late May through July to enjoy watermelon u-pick season, a hands-on experience that educates and delights the whole family. Though fewer farms offer watermelon u-pick compared to strawberries or blueberries, you can still find several locations where you’ll select your perfect melon directly from the field. 

Take your family on a memorable outing where kids will learn where their food comes from. Call farms or check their websites before you visit, because growing conditions and harvest timing affect availability. Wear sun protection and sturdy shoes, and bring your own containers if possible. 

The Florida Department of Agriculture maintains a searchable directory; however, smaller farms might not appear in their listings.
