Deep beneath the Texas Hill Country, a unique holiday celebration transforms Natural Bridge Caverns into an enchanted underground wonderland. “Christmas at the Caverns” brings festive cheer to this remarkable natural formation, located just 30 minutes outside San Antonio, Texas.
The event features local musicians performing carols in the spectacular Discovery Cavern, where limestone formations create natural acoustics for holiday tunes. Above ground, visitors can stroll through the Trail of Lights, glide across a synthetic skating rink, and enjoy s’mores around the campfire. Even Santa and Mrs. Claus make special appearances, and a towering 30-foot Christmas tree anchors the festivities in Discovery Village.

- It’s Texas’s largest cavern system, discovered in 1960 by four college students who then informed the landowners of the discovery. The owners decided to create something the public could enjoy and today, Natural Bridge Caverns is a designated State Historical Site and National Natural Landmark of Historic Places.
- The caverns maintain a constant temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, often reaching 99% humidity levels. On summer days when surface temperatures soar above 100°F, the 30-degree temperature drop provides immediate relief. During winter events like “Christmas at the Caverns,” guests can leave their heavy coats at the entrance and enjoy comfortable caroling in nature’s concert hall, although light jackets are recommended.
- The namesake “natural bridge” is a 60-foot limestone slab that spans the cavern’s entrance. Early settlers and Native Americans used this distinctive formation as a landmark. Today it serves as both a geological wonder and a dramatic gateway to the caverns below.
- Some formations in the cavern continue to grow at a rate of one inch every 100 years. The living, growing nature of Natural Bridge Caverns is one of its most captivating features. Speleothems continue to grow through a meticulous natural process. Over time, deposits accumulate to create stunning formations like stalactites (hanging from the ceiling) and stalagmites (building up from the floor).
- The deepest part of the cavern accessible to visitors lies 180 feet below ground, the equivalent of an 18-story building. While 180 feet marks the deepest point tourists can reach, explorations have revealed that the cave system extends even deeper. These areas remain accessible only to scientific researchers and trained speleologists.
