Planning travels over a cup of coffee - travel trends for 2025

Planning travel in 2025? These travel trends make every type of experience possible!

Travel/Travel News/ Travel Trends

In a world constantly evolving, travel continues to be our most powerful lens for understanding humanity, connection, and personal growth.

As a travel writer and self-proclaimed research diva, I look forward to the flood of travel predictions that arrive each December. These forecasts offer an interesting glimpse into the travel industry’s emerging trends and the collective wanderlust of adventurers planning their journeys for 2025.

For me, the real excitement of holiday sales, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday isn’t about shopping for the latest gizmo or gadget—it’s about scoring epic travel discounts. Whether it’s flights, hotels, or guided tours, these deals are precisely why many of us save throughout the year.

I’m currently tracking the travel trends listed below. I see a few new ones and I’m curious to hear your perspective. Do these themes resonate with you, or do you see something different on the horizon?

“F”-it or Bucket List Travel

Challenge yourself to mark off one new item from your travel bucket list this year.

From hot air ballooning over the African savanna to tagging hammerhead sharks in Costa Rica, travelers are increasingly seeking out unique and extraordinary experiences. This trend seems driven by a couple of factors that are reshaping how we approach travel.

Social media, particularly Instagram, is a powerful source of travel inspiration. Unlike any other time in history, we’re exposed to incredible destinations and once-unimaginable experiences at the tap of a screen. If you’re stuck in a vacation rut, social media offers a window into a world of possibilities beyond the familiar and routine. And, we’re not just swiping and dreaming. People are actually taking action and booking trips and experiences they find on social media platforms,

Travelers Crave Spontaneity

In addition to Instagram travel eye candy, there’s another psychological motivation at play. In a world where most of our lives are meticulously planned, scheduled, and predictable, travelers crave spontaneity and meaningful experiences.

It’s a collective “F**k it” moment—an urge to break free from expectations and listen to our inner adventurer.

Stepping out of our comfort zone is transformative. I say that’s where all the magic happens. Whether it’s splurging on an ocean-view hotel room or spontaneously booking a flight to Paris instead of Peoria, moments of bold choice open up entirely new perspectives.

Plus, the rise of travel hacks, points systems, and online community tips has made once-seemingly impossible dreams feel within reach. And, we’re seeing more and more new flight routes come online which means lower fares to even more off-the-beaten path locations.

Tomorrow is Promised to No-one

So why this new sense of urgency? While the pandemic is far away in our rearview mirror, it taught us a crucial lesson: life is unpredictable, and opportunities can vanish in an instant.

That realization has intensified our desire to travel and experience life fully. To find the joy, take the trip, eat the meal, and do the thing.

As a result, approximately a quarter of travelers are planning to check off bucket list adventures in 2025—proving that the human spirit of exploration is alive and well for every generation.

Family Travel Trends

Glamping scene where family travel provides a different experience

The look of family travel has evolved over the years; however, the opportunity for meaningful connection remains the same.

Growing up, family travel meant cramming into our station wagon, wedging our massive canvas army tent into the back, and heading to the mountains. Those trips were filled with simple pleasures: going days without a bath, fishing in crystal-clear mountain streams, catching marshmallows on fire over the campfire, playing with sticks, and singing silly campfire songs under a blanket of stars.

It wasn’t Disneyland, but everything about it was pure magic. Well, except for maybe the mosquitoes!

Today’s families are seeking that same sense of connection and wonder—but maybe with a few more baths.

Purposeful Parenting

Intrepid Travel calls this emerging travel trends “purposeful parenting,” highlighting a growing desire to do more than just entertain. In 2025, families are looking to engage with destinations, seeking experiences that educate and inspire.

The focus has shifted from passive entertainment to meaningful exploration. Parents want their children to return home with more than a souvenir t-shirt and instead, with the confidence that they can do hard things.

They want them to carry memories, learn skills, and develop a broader understanding of the world. By learning local sports, joining youth-focused tours, or engaging with community activities, children develop confidence, curiosity, and a genuine appreciation for different cultures.

These travel experiences are more than vacations; they’re journeys that challenge kids to step out of their comfort zones. They create lasting memories that shape perspective and inspire a lifelong love of exploration.

Multigenerational Travel: Connecting Seven Generations

multigenerational travel trends are growing in 2025

We live in an incredible moment of time where people are living longer with greater health and opportunity. Why not celebrate that with multigenerational travel?

We are living in an extraordinary moment of human history. People are living longer and enjoying a quality of life that our ancestors didn’t have. As a result we’re witnessing up to seven generations coexisting for the first time in perhaps, forever.

Those born from 1925 to the newest arrivals in what will soon be 2025, have sparked a multigenerational travel trend that benefits the entire family, bringing them together in a special way.

The luxury travel market is particularly interesting. Contrary to popular belief, luxury travel isn’t exclusive to millionaires. According to Virtuoso, 35% of luxury travelers are from households earning between $100,000 and $1 million annually. When multiple generations pool their resources, those dreamy, high-end experiences become wonderfully attainable.

Benefits for Parents and Grandparents

But the benefits of multigenerational travel go beyond financial considerations. For young families, bringing along the grandparents means moments of kid-free exploration for the parents. And by being together in a new place, the family connects and plays in a way that they might not do at home.

In turn, grandparents get to share the world with their grandchildren, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Scientific research suggests these shared experiences trigger neurochemical responses—spikes of dopamine and oxytocin—that promote emotional well-being and strengthen familial bonds.

The Travel Gift of Unrushed Time

I often travel with my granddaughter. From a grandparent’s perspective, I’ve discovered the magic lies in giving children the luxury of unrushed time. During a recent visit to the Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC, I enjoyed seeing the world through her eyes. Instead of following a rigid itinerary, I let her set the pace. I took photos and video on my phone that we shared afterwards.

What surprised me most was how much she actually observed during the museum visit. Moments I thought she’d missed as she moved from exhibit to exhibit were, in fact, absorbed. Our learning experience didn’t end when we left the museum. Even today, our conversations, book readings, and reviewing pictures and videos on my phone continue to spark a new connection over our shared travel experience.

That confirms that multigenerational travel in 2025 isn’t just about visiting destinations; it’s about creating shared experiences and connections that will be cherished for many years to come.

Boomer Travel: Embracing Adventure

Boomers want to keep moving well into their golden years and are embracing many type of travel experiences.

The rise of multigenerational travel has sparked a parallel trend: Baby Boomers are embracing their own travel adventures with renewed enthusiasm. Perhaps inspired by younger generations’ “You Only Live Once” (YOLO) philosophy, Boomers are reassessing their approach to retirement and leisure.

Boomers recognize a profound truth: life is not a dress rehearsal. Medical advances are extending life expectancy and they are prioritizing the quality of those years over the quantity. With this shift in perspective, boomers worry less about what they will leave for the kid’s inheritance and focus on pursuing long-held dreams and bucket list destinations.

Physical and Emotional Benefits for Boomer Travel Trends

The benefits of this travel trend extend far beyond simple leisure. Physical activity through travel helps maintain mobility—reinforcing the adage that when you keep moving, your body continues to move. Equally important are the mental health advantages. Continuous discovery through travel planning and exploration keeps the mind sharp, helps stave off depression, and provides a wealth of stories to share with grandchildren.

Boomer travel trends embrace life with curiosity, courage, and an open heart. They are proving that adventure knows no age limit, transforming retirement from a period of quiet reflection to an era of vibrant exploration.

Solo Travel: Forging Our Own Paths

Traveling solo, especially as a female solo traveler, is on the rise because there is freedom and empowerment in planning your own adventures.

Women are leading the charge on the solo travel scene. According to Virtuoso, 71% of solo travelers are now women—a statistic that speaks volumes about the changing landscape of independent travel. This trend transcends relationship status. No matter if you are single, married, widowed, divorced, or separated, the solo travel trend proves that wanderlust is a universal calling that can be embraced at any stage of life.

There is freedom in planning your own experience. You design an itinerary that speaks directly to your personal interests and passions. No compromises, no negotiations. Just pure, unadulterated exploration.

Sometimes, we adults also need to be reminded that we can do hard things. When you don’t have a travel companion to lean on for some of the challenges that come up when you travel, you uncover strengths and confidence that you may have forgotten you have.

The Solo Journey of Self-Discovery

Another benefit of solo travel is that it becomes a deeply personal journey of self-discovery. You can dive deep into what interests you, learn at your own pace, and fully immerse yourself in new environments.

The travel industry is taking note, with more companies eliminating single supplement fees and creating experiences specifically tailored to independent adventurers.

In my Solo Woman Travel Tips article about my three week trip to Greece, I say there is no “one right way” for a woman to travel, which is precisely how it should be! My personal prediction is that solo travel will continue to trend higher because it’s a celebration of personal freedom, growth, and the undeniable joy of discovering the world on our own terms.

Wellness and Adventure Travel

foraging as a form of wellness travel trends

Wellness travel can be the focus of an entire trip, or it can be sprinkled into your itinerary with activities like foraging, forest bathing, yoga, and spa experiences.

The Global Wellness Institute’s 2024 Wellness Economy Monitor reveals an exciting trend. The wellness economy reached $6.3 trillion in 2023 and is projected to grow to $9.0 trillion by 2028.

Wellness travel isn’t medical tourism. Instead, it’s a proactive approach to health.

Modern travelers want more than sightseeing and souvenirs. They crave experiences that nourish mind, body, and soul, combining adventure with intentional wellness. These experiences focus on maintaining, managing, and improving overall well-being through authentic, engaging activities.

Wellness travel has many looks. Some travelers book an entire wellness retreat—a spa weekend or a dedicated wellness cruise. Others incorporate wellness elements into broader travel plans: a sunrise yoga class, forest bathing, rejuvenating mud baths, or nutritional cooking workshops. The common thread is a desire to return home feeling transformed from the inside out from experiences that heal and invigorate.

The message to the travel industry is clear. Vacations are no longer just about escape. Travelers also want personal growth, a sense of wellbeing, and holistic rejuvenation.

Phenomena Travel: Nature’s Spectacular Displays

dark skies

Something shifts inside of us when we get close to nature. During a recent trip to a dark skies area in Pennsylvania, lying in the cool grass under the stars brought a deep sense of connection and peace.

The 2024 Solar Eclipse demonstrated the powerful allure of natural phenomena, with rural lodging along the eclipse’s path selling out months in advance. This remarkable event underscores a growing travel trend: people’s profound desire to witness extraordinary natural spectacles, often journeying to the most remote corners of the earth.

Expedia Group’s Unpack 25 Report reveals the top earthly wonders capturing travelers’ imaginations.

The Northern Lights top the list, with 61% of travelers dreaming of witnessing this ethereal light show.

Geological marvels follow closely, with 30% of travelers eager to explore volcanoes, geysers, and hot springs—nature’s most dynamic and awe-inspiring landscapes.

Exploring The Planet’s Wildlife

Then, there are those seeking an unforgettable connection with wildlife and their remarkable habitats. Walking among penguins in the stark landscape of Antarctica, witnessing the moment when baby sea turtles emerge from their nest and their mad rush to the safety of ocean waters, or standing in awe and reverence during a whale watching expedition.

These experiences quench a thirst for intimate encounters with the planet’s most vulnerable and magnificent life forms. They speak to our deep-seated desire to connect with the unscripted drama of the natural world and be present for life’s most delicate and powerful performances.

The Future of Travel

older could walking along an empty beach - travel trends are wide open

The future of travel is whatever we choose it to be.

What I find interesting about these travel trends is they provide an alternate viewpoint about the authenticity of what you see on social media. While it’s true that most of the photos online have gone through a little bit of editing to make the colors pop and look good in the social feed, and the outfits for those photoshoots are carefully planned out weeks in advance, the joy found in travel is real.

Looking ahead to 2025, these travel trends tell a powerful story about the desire for human connection, personal growth, and unbridled curiosity. Of course, some people are shooting those pictures “for the gram.” But when they put their camera down, they are seeking more than a destination to check off their list.

Whether multigenerational adventures, solo journeys, wellness experiences, or chasing natural phenomena, people are pursuing transformative experiences that enhance their understanding of the world and their place in it.

As Mark Twain wisely noted, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.” No matter where the travel inspiration comes from, or what form of travel you choose to experience, moving beyond your boundaries continues to be a powerful vehicle for learning, healing, and connecting with the people, cultures, and environments around the world.

The future of travel isn’t just about where we go, but how deeply we engage with the world around us.
