Punta Gorda / Charlotte Harbor welcomed it’s newest luxury waterfront resort in December, 2023

News in Travel: Looking for upscale stays in Port Charlotte Florida?

Florida visitors and residents have a new luxury resort to enjoy in Southwest Florida! The opening of Sunseeker Resort Charlotte Harbor in December 2023 gives visitors more options. But did you know that this hotel-resort is part of the Allegiant brand?

The building of this property reminds me of how railroad company visionaries from the past built luxury hotels for travelers in cities their railcars traveled to. Similarly, the airline brand has placed the Sunseeker resort near airports serviced by Allegiant Air. While Charlotte Harbor is not unchartered territory, many would agree it remains untouched and pure. This adds to its beauty and charm.

The Newest Upscale Stays in Port Charlotte Florida

We recently drove down to Charlotte County’s oldest area to experience this destination. It seems we weren’t the only ones interested in seeing this new upscale stays in Port Charlotte. The day we were there, the property had only been open a few weeks.. What struck me was the local residents who were enjoying the waterfront promenade and food hall,  inaugural guests lounging by the huge outdoor waterfront pool area, even on a somewhat cloudy day, and the employees who were eager to share this new property with everyone who walked into the lobby.

I talked with a young lady at the reception desk who is a fourth generation resident of Charlotte Harbor. She is one of the many local residents who now works at this showcase upscale stays in Port Charlotte Florida. She commented how wonderful it was that in her little hometown, there was now a luxury destination for the world to enjoy!

Another group of older residents looked at an artpiece on the wall depicting a map of the area. Standing in the hall located near the grocery and sundries located on the main floor of the resort they were in excited conversation. It appeared they had just finished a meal at one of the many restaurant options and were pointing to the map, showing where they lived.

We saw much authentic excitement from the community about this upscale resort that has given people near and far a reason to travel to Charlotte Harbor.

Easy Airport Access

Because Charlotte Harbor / Punta Gorda is located in the middle of the Gulf Coast, you can reach it from several airports, with Punta Gorda (PGD) being the closest. You have probably heard me say it before, but I love flying into and out of smaller airports for domestic travel. We have used PGD and Allegiant Airlines for travel to Tennessee and would happily use their non-stop options again!

Other nearby Florida airports, in order of proximity to Sunseeker Resort Charlotte Harbor, include:

  • Southwest Florida International (RSW)
  • Sarasota Bradenton International (SRQ)
  • St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE)
  • Tampa International Airport (TPA)
  • Orlando International Airports (MCO) and (SFB)
  • Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL)
  • Miami International Airport (MIA)

As Maurice J. Gallagher, CEO and founder of Allegiant, noted in a recent press release, “This is a transformational project for Allegiant. It’s a catalyst for our continued growth as an integrated travel company and an example of how the industry can adapt to continue providing customers with the products and services they want.”

I applaud this vision because non-stop flights are a sought-after travel convenience, and Allegiant has many options from Florida airports.

About Allegiant Airlines

Gregory Anderson, Allegiant president, says, “We have helped pioneer selling ancillary products both inside and outside of an airplane, in turn, diversifying our revenue streams…Over the past five years, we have sold on average about 300,000 ‘third-party’ hotel room nights per year to our customers. The opening of Sunseeker Resort is a key milestone in providing more customer offerings through our ‘first-party’ integrated resort.”

And, as you would expect, the airline and hotel offer a loyalty program through ALLWAYS Rewards.

Allegiant Airlines has been intentionally expanding its reach in Florida since 2005. As of September 2023, they have flown approximately 1.8 million passengers in and out of Punta Gorda Airport. And, since launching its first Florida destination in 2005, Allegiant’s air service in the state has grown to 10 cities and more than 200 routes.

Allegiant flies nearly 8 million leisure travelers in and out of Florida annually, generating more than $2 billion in annual economic impact in the state. In addition to its service to Punta Gorda, Allegiant currently operates flights from nearby St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE), Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB), and Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) – all within a two-hour drive of Charlotte Harbor.

The press release talks about the positive economic impact for the local economy:

“The travel company’s presence supports nearly 21,000 jobs in Florida. Sunseeker will create more than 1,000 permanent jobs in the Charlotte County area alone, and is anticipated to spark an increase of 300,000 visitors annually to the area. Conservative modeling estimates up to $1 billion in economic impact at a ten-year horizon.”
